All right. It's been a few months since the new movie came out and I have been dying to discuss it with some Narnia fans. A friend of mine suggested we go see it at the dollar theatre which is what reminded me. Spoilers below, just highlight to read:
Firstly, as a separate entity from the book that happens to share the same name, I liked it. But when you start comparing the two, it is obvious who wins: The book. Hands down. I saw it on opening day so I was very excited to see it. But I should have known that the movie would just fail compared to the book. Which disappoints me because I have read that the director loved the books and wants to stay very true to them. What went wrong director?
The first thing that bothered me was when Caspian blew Queen Susan's horn. He doesn't blow the horn when he first meets Trufflehunter the badger and Trumpkin the dwarf for the first time. Sure, he's scared. But he doesn't blow the horn. Then back in England, the movie never explained that the Pevensies were going their separate ways and that they would not see each other for some time or that Lucy and Edmund are going to their cousin's house which sets up the next book/movie. And the fight that Peter just happened to get in at the train station?
Next, a good chunk of the book is a flashback. When Trumpkin meets the children at the ruins of Cair Paravel, he tells them the story of Prince Caspian and what led him to blowing the horn (see above). Not much bothered me until Susan's eyes met Caspian's and everyone in the audience knew they liked each other. *flipping through the book* Can someone tell me where that came from? I realize that Hollywood had to put some romance in there to make it... oh what's the word... dramatic.. but still.
Then there was the whole added scene of the storming of Miraz's castle. Completely new and time filler in my opinion. It didn't add anything expect adding to the tension between Peter and Caspian. Which again, wasn't necessarily there in the book. *sigh*
Even though I complain about the movie, I really enjoyed it (weird I know, but that's how I am). This was a post just to point out the differences I noticed and see what others have to say. What they think about the changes. Or even some changes that I overlooked (I'm sure there are plenty). Or maybe you disagree with me and liked the movie better than the book. I just wanted to open up a discussion.
